What we build

Anatomically accurate expression for embodied machines

X Anima is building the software and actuation systems that give robots and embodied characters genuinely believable expression — faces, eyes, and gestures grounded in how human faces actually move, rather than how animators guess they move.

Our core technology is an expression engine in development that translates a character's emotional state into anatomically truthful motion on any embodiment: a screen avatar, an animatronic character, or a humanoid robot head. One engine, many faces — designed so that the same genuine smile, with the same muscle timing, can be performed by very different machines.

Alongside the engine, we are developing clinically grounded methods for measuring how believable a machine's expressions are to the humans watching them — because an industry racing to put robots in front of people will need a rigorous way to know whether those people feel welcomed or unsettled.

Our approach

Surgical ground truth, not guesswork

Human facial expression is a precise anatomical system: dozens of muscles, firing in exact sequences measured in tens of milliseconds, producing signals the human brain has evolved to read flawlessly — and to distrust instantly when they are wrong. Most robot faces fail because they approximate this system from the outside.

X Anima works from the inside. Our founding team combines one of the world's most experienced facial reconstructive surgeons — with the clinical understanding of facial musculature, expression dynamics, and the Facial Action Coding System that 6,000+ reconstructions build — with two decades of leading humanoid robotics research. We translate that anatomy directly into engineering: which movements matter, how far, how fast, in what order, and how to reproduce them mechanically without falling into the uncanny valley.

We believe the machines people will welcome into stores, venues, hospitals, and homes will not be the most photorealistic ones — they will be the most emotionally truthful ones.

Dr Leo Kim, FRACS

Specialist reconstructive plastic surgeon with over 6,000 facial reconstructions performed. Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons; fellowship training at NYU and Cornell; peer-reviewed author and surgical textbook contributor; nine years teaching facial surgery to specialist trainees. Leo's clinical mapping of human facial expression forms the anatomical foundation of X Anima's technology.

Prof. Luis Sentis, PhD

Co-founder

Professor at The University of Texas at Austin and one of the field's most experienced humanoid roboticists. Stanford PhD; led UT's Human Centered Robotics Laboratory; NASA Valkyrie and DARPA Robotics Challenge contributor; co-founder of Apptronik, the Austin-based humanoid robotics company. Luis co-designed "Dreamer," the expressive robot head whose character-first philosophy X Anima carries forward.
